1 held for cheating man of Rs 18 lakh

Police arrested a person on charges of cheating at Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas on Tuesday night. The accused, a promoter, had allegedly cheated his customer recently. Police arrested the accused promoter Ashok Roy on the basis of complaint lodged by victim Surajit Naskar.

Naskar, a local resident at Sonarpur's Missionpalli had reportedly given Rs 18 lakh to Roy who did not give him possession of a land as promised. He did not even return his money.

Naskar had gone to the police to lodge a complaint against the promoter after he refused to return money.

"I was in a terrible situation. He promised me to provide me a land at Sonarpur. He showed the plot as well. But he was delaying the process. He was also making false excuses for that," said Naskar.

"I gave him the total amount of Rs 18 Lakh. He received the money from me. Once I asked him to return my money after getting fed up with his approach and he then started to avoid me," Naskar added.

"One day Roy said, he will not return the money. He also said that I have to wait long to get the possession of my land. Then I decided to go to police and lodge an FIR against him," the victim further added.

The investigators, however, interrogated the man. Police suspected that the accused might have some connections with land mafias.
