Koirala returns from US after cancer treatment

Upon arrival last night, the 74-year-old Nepali Congress leader said that he has fully recovered from the lung cancer, which was in its initial stage. At the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, where he underwent a surgery for tongue cancer eight years ago, doctors took seven days to diagnose the white patches in his lungs.

After receiving five sessions of radiotherapy, a lesion in his right lung had shrunk 80 per cent, Koirala’s personal physician Dr Karbir Nath Yogi told reporters.

‘I have always been fighting with death? be it tongue cancer or this newly developed disease. I have never kept my diseases secret,’ Koirala said. ‘The love and affection pouring in from several quarters gave me a new lease of life,’ Koirala said. Koirala said he conquered the disease due to the prayers and good wishes of the entire Nepali community as well as foreigners, including his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, who had personally wished him speedy recovery.

Dr Yogi, who worked closely with the team involved in Koirala’s treatment, said the radiation therapy for squamous cell carcinoma of lung yielded excellent clinical as well as radiological results, enabling him to return home after a short recovery time.
