KMC to conduct camps for street food vendors

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will prepare a list of food vendors.
The survey will be conducted borough wise. This is for the first time when such a list is going to be prepared.

Senior officials of KMC’s health department said that once the list was prepared the civic authorities would organise camps where it will be taught how to maintain quality of food served at the stalls would be discussed. The KMC will also carry out campaigns and distribute leaflets among them. The KMC will conduct surprise checks at the stalls and collect food samples which will be tested at its laboratories. If the samples are found to be of poor quality, then action would be taken against the vendors.

The owners of small hotels and restaurants will also be invited to join the camps. The KMC teams will conduct surprise raids at the restaurants and hotels and take food samples. Action will be taken against the errant owners.

Senior civic officials said that lakh of people including many of those coming from the districts eat breakfast and lunch at the stalls and small restaurants. Hundreds of such stalls have come up in the central business district, that is in and around BBD Bag, Brabourne Road, Council House Street where office goers come to eat. Hence it is absolutely necessary to maintain the quality. The officials said that the vendors would be taught about the cooking medium and the quality of vegetables, fish, chicken and mutton which they procure from the market.
