Khanna to contest for ITF president’s post

All India Tennis Association (AITA) president Anil Khanna will be contesting for the post of new president of the International Tennis Federation at its Annual General Meeting in Santiago, Chile on September 25.

Also the president of Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), Khanna will be up against USA’s David Haggerty, Juan Margets Lobato of Spain and Rene Stammbach of Switzerland for the top post in ITF.

The AGM will be hosted by the Chilean Tennis Federation from September 23 to 25 with over 280 delegates, partners and staff from National Associations, Regional Associations, Foundation Members and Recognised Organisations, according to an ITF statement.

The new president will have a four-year term from 2015 to 2019, and will replace the outgoing Francesco Ricci Bitti, who has decided to step down after 16 years in office.

Elections will also be held for the new ITF board of directors for the same period of four years.
Incumbent board member Khanna will also be vying for one of the 13 posts available and is among the 26 candidates.

At Friday’s AGM, the countries will also vote on the introduction of fifth set tiebreaks in Davis Cup starting in 2016. The draw for the 2016 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas will be held during the AGM on Wednesday.
