Kejriwal visits attacker, forgives

A day after the slapgate incident, the AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday met Lalli Mahato (38) who attacked him during his campaign in Delhi on Tuesday. Mahato, an auto-rickshaw driver who slapped him in Sultanpuri in North-west Delhi on Tuesday apologised to Kejriwal. Mahato said he committed a big mistake. ‘I’ve committed a big mistake. I should have never done what I did. I consider Kejriwal god,’ said Mahato. He sought forgiveness from Kejriwal and his colleague Manish Sisodia. He also bent down to touch their feet even as they tried to stop him. Mahato said he had been wanting to meet Kejriwal for a long time and even went to his ‘janata darbar’ when AAP ruled Delhi for a short period of 49 days. ‘I was unhappy and wanted to meet Kejriwal but couldn’t, he said.

He spoke to the AAP leader with folded hands, and tried to touch his feet. ‘I committed a big mistake. I did it because he left the government after some days,’ he said, referring to Kejriwal’s resignation in February, after 49 days in power, over the Jan Lokpal bill. Kejriwal also met Abdul Wahid, 19, on Wednesday who punched him in Dakshinpuri in south Delhi last Friday. Wahid, a resident of Jamia Nagar area, punched him at a rally on 4 April.
