Kashmir’s self-proclaimed godman arrested for raping four minor girls

Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested a fake dervish on charges of raping four minor girls in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The fake dervish Gulzar Ahmad Bhat hailed from Litter Chadoora area of Budgam district on Tuesday.

Bhat was arrested after police received a joint complaint from four minor girls that they were repeatedly ‘sexually exploited’ during their stay at the institute. Police said that a case under section 376 RPC has been lodged. The statement of the girls have been recorded before chief judicial magistrate Budgam, it added.

The fake dervish had created network of followers in several parts of the Valley. Bhat used to deliver sermons on cable television and used to highlight himself through advertisements in local newspapers. He claimed to have achieved knowledge of the spiritual truth. He used to lure girls by convincing them that would be purified by having relationship with him, police said.

A police spokesman said that the investigations were going on and they were expecting more revelation from the arrested person.

Meanwhile several religious scholars have termed his acts as ‘blasphemous’ and ‘shameless’ by misinterpreting the Islamic teachings.

‘Gulzar has committed blasphemous act by misinterpreting Islamic values and teachings for shameful acts. We demand stern action against the fraud faith healers running a racket under the garb of providing Islamic education to innocent masses,’ said Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema, an amalgam of different religious organisations.
