Kachroo ragging case: HC enhances fine to Rs 1,00,000

Upholding the judgment of the district judge, Kangra at Dharamshala convicting the four persons accused of causing death to Aman Kachroo and sentencing them to four years’ imprisonment, division bench, of Himachal Pradesh high court, comprising Justice R B Misra and Justice Surinder Singh on Thursday enhanced the fine on the convicts from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1,00,000 each.

The trial in district court commenced on 1 June, 2009 and the accused were sentenced to four years’ imprisonment on 11 November, 2010.

Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma were held guilty on 11 November, 2010, under sections 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 34 (common intent) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC by additional district and sessions judge Purinder Vaidya after 20 months of trial.

Aman Kachroo was the first year student of Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College Tanda at the time of incident, whereas the three accused Navin Kumar Verma, Ajay Verma and Mukul Sharma were the second year students of the same College. One of the accused Abhinav Verma was doing his internship in the college at the time of incident.
