Kabaddi player Rohit Chillar arrested from Mumbai

Days after a 28-year-old woman, Lalita, wife of national-level Pro-Kabaddi player Rohit Kumar Chillar allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her parents’ residence in West Delhi’s Nangloi area, a team of Delhi Police arrested Rohit from Mumbai on Friday and have asked for his transit remand. Meanwhile, Kumar’s father, Vijay Singh surrendered at the Nangloi police station.

A senior police official said that after Rohit’s father surrendered, he was questioned.

“Rohit Chillar, who serves in the Indian Navy, was detained by a team of Delh Police in Mumbai at noon,” said Dependra Pathak, Joint Commissioner of Police (South-west).

Another senior police official said that Vijay, who was a Sub-Inspector in the Delhi Police, has been dismissed from service. A court sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

According to the police, Lalita had left behind a two-hour-long audio clip and a 30-minute-long video clip in which she claimed that her in-laws had been mentally harassing her.

The police officer said: “In the video and audio clips she left behind in her phone, she said that her in-laws were quite conservative and would often taunt her for her “modern” outlook and things like ‘pallu’ falling off her head and other minor things.

She also said that while Rohit was away in Mumbai, they kept her in Delhi.” Police said that in her suicide note and messages, she alleged that on October 15, Rohit told her that if she “goes away” from his life, he would be very happy.

He dropped her halfway to her house and left, she alleged. She said that the act of Rohit was traumatic for her. Meanwhile, in a video message released on Facebook on Thursday, Rohit sobbed and pleaded innocence. “I have never made any demand for dowry and my father-in-law knows it. I will cooperate with the police in the investigation,” he said.

He said that he “loved his wife” and wants the truth to come out. “I have played for the country and have never harmed anyone. The person, I loved the most, has left me forever... Whatever happens, I want the truth to come out.”
