Juvenile inmates kill cop, injure four others in Meerut

In a brutal attack on policemen by juveniles kept in an observation centre in Meerut district, one police man was killed while five others, including a sub-inspector, were critically injured. Attackers not only thrashed the policemen with bricks, iron rods and cricket bats but also forced the cops to flee to escape their wrath.

Police said that the victims were targeted by the group of juveniles at Surajkund Observation Centre on Thursday evening because they had prevented the latter from misbehaving with women while they were returning after a court hearing from neighbouring Bulandshahr district. Police claimed that the accused were involved in abusing women at court premises and had heated exchange of arguments with the policemen and they had warned the policemen of dire consequences on reaching the centre. Police revealed that just before entering the observation centre, the juveniles once again started abusing women who were passing by.

Once inside, they started brick-batting and stone pelting at the police team. In the meantime, they caught two policemen - Omprakash Singh (53) and Bhagwan Singh (35) - and hit them several times on their heads with bricks and rods . Four others were also beaten mercilessly while trying to rescue Omprakash, posted at district police lines, and Bhagwan. To avoid the ire of the inmates, several policemen hid themselves insides police vans and other places too. Matter was reported to the senior officials and police teams from nearby police stations reached the spot.
