Junior doctors stage protest at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday staged sit-in demonstration inside the hospital after the police failed to arrest the culprits who led an attack on the junior doctors on last Saturday night.

Incidentally, it may be mentioned that the students were on a cease work for more than 24 hours from Sunday morning demanding the security of doctors inside the hospital premises.

They stopped the protest after senior health department officials had assured them to provide adequate security.

But from Thursday morning, they again started protesting as the accused, who attacked the junior doctors, were still at large. However, their demonstration did not affect the health services in the hospital as they took part in a relay movement after performing their duty.

Dr Abhisek Kumar Jha, a post-graduate student of surgery who was severely injured when an irate mob led an attack on the junior doctors late Saturday night has been undergoing treatment in the critical care unit of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. His condition is stated to be critical. The doctors in the hospital said that his both kidneys were damaged when the mob punched and kicked him on his chest. Some other doctors were also injured in the incident.

The mob went on a rampage in the hospital after a patient had died following a road accident.

The relatives of the patient alleged negligence on the part of the hospital and beaten up some of the doctors on Saturday night.  Four doctors were injured among whom Dr Jha had sustained serious injuries.

The students who took part in the protest said that they will continue the movement till the other culprits who had beaten up Dr Jha is not arrested. They demanded a strong action again the accused. Police have said that a probe is underway.
