Junior doctors stage protest at NRS Medical College, demand security

Junior doctors at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the emergency building demanding adequate security arrangements for doctors.

Some junior doctors, who were on duty at the emergency ward on Wednesday night, were roughed up by the relatives of a patient who suffered head injury after meeting with a road accident in Beliaghata. The accident took place when the victim Sundar Biswas was riding the motor cycle in a drunken state, police said.

The junior doctors on Thursday alleged that victim’s relatives who were also in an inebriated state assaulted them in the pretext of medical negligence.

Hospital authorities have said that there was no adequate police personnel inside the hospital campus.

There must be some more deployment of police force to check this type of incident. More than 600 doctors including 200 PGT, 250 interns and 150 house staff joined the demonstration.

They said some senior police officials had earlier assured them two family members for each patient will be allowed to enter the hospital but in reality many of the patient’s relatives were getting access to the doctors.

Senior official at the hospital said that protest movement would not have any impact on the health services as the doctors joined the movement after attending their respective duty in the hospital.

Another charge of negligence was leveled against the Chachal Sub-divisional hospital in Malda when the family members of the new born alleged that nursing staff members removed a portion of skin from his hand while removing saline channel. The relatives of the patient put up demonstration at the hospital Wednesday night. The hospital authority had ordered a probe into the incident. The baby was later shifted Malda Medical College and Hospital.
