JU V-C rubbishes BJP’s claims of him having ‘political agenda’

Brushing aside the allegations of BJP leader Sidharth Nath Singh that he was silent on the issue of anti-national slogans following the instruction of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Vice Chancellor of the varsity Suranjan Das on Saturday said that such a comment from a senior leader was uncalled for and he has worked impartially throughout his career.

In reply to a question on the issue of anti-national slogan in JU, Singh on Saturday said that Governor is the custodian of the university and he has sought a report in connection with the incident.

The V-C should follow the directions given to him and submit the report as early as possible.

It may be mentioned that the Governor had sought a report on the anti-national slogans raised in the campus of the university following the ongoing trouble in Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Singh had alleged that the V-C was not taking action against the students who gave anti-national slogans due to political interference.

He also added that the V-C cannot ignite nationalistic feeling among the students.

Going a step ahead, the BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said like Jawaharlal Nehru University antinational activists from Jadavpur University would have been dragged out if his party had been in power.

“Neither students nor any teachers would have been spared. Prompt action would have been taken against the anti-nationalist activists and they would have been thrown out of the university.

Here the V-C does not have the guts to lodge FIR against them,” he said.

In reply to the comments passed about his stand on the issue, Das said: “It is sad if a senior leader passes such a comment about a VC. No one can say that any kind of political interference had affected my work. I have also worked for a long time during the Left Front regime.”

He further said that everybody has independence of speech and problems can be sorted out by means of discussions.

It will not help if an issue takes a violent turn. Apart from that it is better to manage the situation by the means of discussion. Jadavpur University is an autonomous body and it has its rules and regulations and those will be followed while taking any decision.

Moreover Jadavpur University is an institution where there are scopes to settle a matter by means of discussion.
