JU to introduce NOTA for students’ election

The University Grant Commission (UGC) earlier recommended ‘none of the above’ (NOTA) option in the students’ union elections. Jadavpur University reportedly decided to introduce NOTA in their elections.

“We’ll introduce NOTA in the forthcoming students’ elections. It’ll be introduced for the first time here. The date of the election is January 25 and the result will come out in January 27. The student candidates can file their nominations from January 10,” said Rajat Roy, the dean of students.

It is to be recalled that Delhi University used the NOTA option in their student body elections.

NOTA was introduced in the last Assembly elections in West Bengal, where people pressed the bottom there to expressed their non-confidence over all the contesting candidates in that Assembly.

The UGC recommended the universities to introduce NOTA in the college elections to give the student electors a similar chance.

However, it was not an easy decision to take on the part of university. The JU authority held several meetings to ascertain the opinion of students about NOTA. The opinions of the entire department were discussed.

“We haven’t opposed the decision. But it was supposed to come from the students, not from university authority,” said Shraman Guha, general secretary of Arts department’s student union.

It may be recalled, More than 17,000 voters in the Delhi University Students’ Union elections opted for the NOTA option introduced for the first time this year. For the four central panel posts, the results of which were announced, NOTA vote share ranged from 6.3 per cent to 12.6 per cent.
