JU student’s body found hanging in varsity hostel

A student of Jadavpur University committed suicide in his hostel room. His body was found on Sunday morning at around 11.30 am. Soumitra Dey, an MA second year student of Philosophy was not seen till the Saturday evening by his friends who were shocked to know the fate of their classmate.

His room-mate Prasanta (name changed) went to his native home last week and the deceased was living in the room alone. His next door friend Raj (name changed) knocked the door on Sunday afternoon to call him for lunch. But he did not get any reply.

Beating on the door of Soumitra’s room several times and not getting any response planted seeds of doubt in Raj’s mind. He called up people from administrative building. The police were also called up.

Police opened the door and entered the room. To their utter shock, they found the body of Soumitra hanging from the ceiling fan. A headphone was still fixed in his ears. The hanging body from JU Main Hostel’s B-Block’s room 9 was recovered and sent for autopsy.

Police said Soumitra was the resident of Bankura district. He was the student of Indian Metaphysics and graduated from Belur College in 2014. “He was a jovial boy. His examination for third semester was going on. It is a very unfortunate incident,” said Vice-Chancellor of JU, Suranjan Das.

Meanwhile, police have started investigation. Lakshman Dey, the father and the victim’s elder brother Shrimonto Dey triggered their allegation towards the university administration.

However, police learnt that the Soumitra was quarrelling with somebody on Saturday evening. Some students who then were climbing a tree near his room heard him quarrelling. The topic of the discussion was relationship and marriage. “We suspect that he was having a problematic time with his girlfriend. This may be the reason for his suicide,” said an investigating officer.
