JNU to hold three-day seminar

On the occasion of completing 40 years, Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS), School of Social Sciences II, Jawahar lal Nehru University, will  hold a three-day international seminar, from 18 to 20 December.

The theme for the seminar is Sociology Matters: Challenges and Possibilities of Social Science Knowledge in Contemporary India.

CSSS chairperson Maitrayee Chaudhuri said, ‘The centre was established in 1971 following the enactment of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act of 1966. In the spirit of the Act, the centre has sought to promote ideas of social justice, a democratic way of life, international understanding both through its teaching and research as well as the cultivation of an inclusive and democratic everyday institutional space.’

Chaudhuri added, ‘Diversity and plurality have been integral to our vision. This is reflected in the social composition of students and faculty on the one hand; and in theoretical approaches, methods of enquiry and objects of research on the other hand. In today’s context of globalisation, the role of higher education for critique, debate and alternative visions remains important.’
