JNU students protest outside Delhi Police HQ

A day after they were detained while attempting to take out a protest march to India Gate, JNU students on Monday staged a demonstration outside Police Headquarters in ITO over the issue of a student who has been missing from campus since 24 days.

The protest outside PHQ also led to traffic snarls at the ITO cross-section.

Najeeb Ahmed (27), a student of School of Biotechnology and a native of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, went missing on October 15 following an on-campus scuffle allegedly with the members of ABVP the night before.

Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees and his family members also met Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma and other senior officers who assured them of all possible action in the matter.

After coming out of the meeting, Fatima said, “I have been told that all possible steps are being taken to trace Najeeb. I just want him back.”

Nafees, however, refused to comment on the fact that she was allegedly dragged by Delhi Police officers yesterday and detained.

“I’m ready to tolerate more pain than what I went through yesterday just to get my son back,” she said.

Najeeb’s family members also alleged that the officers didn’t talk about yesterday’s incident where they were detained enroute to India Gate and taken to different police stations.

In anticipation of protest by JNU students at police headquarters, Delhi Police had tightened security and barricades were put on the path from the ITO metro station to the PHQ.
