Jilted lover stabs girl, attempts suicide

The victim who has been identified as Julie Khatun was critically injured in the incident is undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Salt Lake.

According to doctors, her injuries were serious and she has been kept under constant monitoring. It was learnt that the victim, a resident of Bijpur in North 24 Parganas was going to attend a class in Salt Lake on Thursday when the accused youth Alam Barik had attacked her with a knife.

Police said that the accused was from Naihati in the same district where the girl resides. The relationship between the two deteriorated few days ago after the victim had turned down the accused’s proposal to marry him. Julie had told the accused with whom she had been into a relationship for a while that she would like to continue her study and hence she had no plans of marrying as of now. But the accused youth tried to convince her to continue with the relationship and marry him. He was also trying to mount pressure on her.

In the last few days, the girl was trying to avoid Alam following which both of them had engaged in a quarrel. The accused also threatened the girl as she was not showing any interest in him. The quarrel took an ugly turn on Thursday when the accused stopped her near Bangur Avenue.

A heated altercation broke out between the two when Alam suddenly took out a knife and stabbed on her back. She screamed for help, attracting the attention of the local residents and passers-by. As the people rushed to the place they found that the accused had already consumed poison to commit suicide.

The local residents rushed the girl to a private nursing home in Salt Lake while the accused was taken to a nursing home in Lake Town. The accused had told the police that the girl entered into another relationship with a youth.
