Jaitley’s 1st full Budget on Feb 28, braces for belligerent Opp

The parliament will have a special sitting Saturday, a holiday, for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to present the Budget which will be preceded by the Economic Survey on February 27 and Railway Budget on February 26.

The budget session is expected to be stormy as the government would be facing fire over the issue of taking ordinance route and skipping the parliament over host of issues including that related to land acquisition. Experts say that if the growth momentum is able to sustain its speed both the Nifty and the Sensex may hit record highs ahead of the Budget.

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs which met here today recommended to the President the schedule of the Budget session. In the past too, the Budget had been presented on a Saturday if it happened to be the last day of February, traditionally the day for budget presentation, a senior minister said.

The session, being the first in the New Year will begin with the President’s address to the joint sitting of the two Houses on which there will be discussion and a vote. The first part of this session will continue till March 20. The second part will commence after a month-long recess from April 20. The session will conclude on May 8, official sources said.

Parliamentary committees will examine the demands for grants of the various ministries during the recess. The Motion of Thanks to the President’s address will be debated on February 24 and 25.

During the session, government will push for passage of bills on six ordinances promulgated recently. The ordinances include those on coal, mines and minerals, e-rickshaws, amendment to Citizenship Act, Land Acquisition and the one on FDI in insurance sector.
