Jailed Chautala addresses rally via phone, faces probe

Despite the recent tall claims made by Vimla Mehra, the Director General of Central Prisons, Tihar, of making  mobile jammers effective inside the jail, it has been alleged that Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Ajay Chautala addressed a public rally in Haryana through telephone which was made from prison number 2. Tihar jail authorities have ordered an enquiry into the matter.

Ajay Singh Chautala, along with his father Om Prakash Chautala, is lodged in Tihar Jail number 2. The duo were convicted in a case of illegal recruitments of teachers in Haryana and sentenced to 10 years in jail.

They are lodged with 53 others, including INLD legislator Sher Singh Badshami and two bureaucrats, who were also convicted in the scam.

‘All inmates are allowed to talk to their family every day for five minutes through phone. Ajay Chautala telephoned his son on 19-20 February who in turn called his supporters. Chautala then addressed them through speaker phone,’ said Vimla Mehra.

According to the jail authorities, an enquiry was set up on Saturday. The report is likely to be submitted today.

‘Suitable action will be taken if the allegation against Chautala is found true,’ added Mehra. Another jail official said that Chautala addressed a rally in Sonipat district on 20 February for five minutes when his son Dushyant connected him up through the speaker phone.

According to sources, Chautala used the occasion to update the crowd about the health of his jailed father and former chief minister of Haryana Om Prakash Chautala and also enquired about the well-being of villagers. The trial court last month sentenced both the convicts and eight others to 10 years in jail while one convict was sentenced to 5 years and forty-five others were handed out four year jail terms.
