It’s election time at campus

The union election for students of  both the university is scheduled for 12 September. Money and muscle power still dominates the elections at DU. The traditional rivals Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), student wing of BJP and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Congress’ youth wing, fight it out through posters, massive rallies and other incentives for students.

The recommendations of Lyngdoh committee, which was set up to regulate student elections are violated without any fear.

Meanwhile, the leftist All India Students Association (AISA) claims that it is trying to reverse the pattern of student elections and intend to bring ‘election reform’.

Popular in JNU, AISA wants to introduce presidential debate and general body meeting in colleges for better interaction with students.

At JNU, the politically active campus is gearing up for the popular and traditional presidential debate to be held on 10 September. Meanwhile, the major player AISA, which swept all the four positions in Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections last year might witness a set back in this year’s poll. This may be because of cases of sexual harassment against elected JNUSU president and joint secretary reported by Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH).

The other upcoming  and prominent player is Student Federation of India (SFI) which is utilising this opportunity quite well.
