Ishrat Jahan case: Mystery rifle triggers CBI chase

CBI officials probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter case are now on a new hunt - antecedents of AK 56 rifle recovered from Ishrat and three other alleged terrorists who were gunned down in a fake encounter in June 2004.
‘Investigations have proven now that the encounter was fake. Five police officials, including an IPS officer G L Singhal, have already been arrested for staging the encounter. Now, we’re gathering evidence on the source of AK 56 which was found with the four who were branded as terrorists by the crime branch officials in 2004. It is quite obvious that the rifle was planted on the victims,’ said a CBI official. The CBI has written a letter to the state government seeking information on make and serial numbers of automatic rifles recovered by Gujarat police from Jharania in 1993. The probe agency has also sought similar details of automatic rifles recovered in two cases - Ishrat encounter of 2004 and arrest of Yasin and Qasim Noor in 2003.
