IPS officer convicted in graft case

A special anti-corruption court in Mumbai on Wednesday convicted AK Jain, a senior IPS official of 1982 batch and his chartered accountant (CA) for demanding bribe from a police inspector.
Jain and his CA Prasanna Lodha have been sentenced to five years imprisonment and also have to pay a fine of Rs. 1.5 lakh each. Jain was under suspension.
According to the prosecution case, Jain, a deputy inspector general of police (DIG) rank officer, was accused of demanding bribe of Rs. 5 lakh in 2000 from the then police inspector attached to Byculla police station Sanjeev Kokil.
As per the case, Kokil was facing an inquiry after a bar in his jurisdiction was found to be open beyond the prescribed time limit.
As per the prosecution case Jain had demanded money to clear him from the inquiry. Kokil had filed a complaint with Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) after which the investigation began.
The police had first arrested Jain’s CA Lodha who in his statement revealed Jain’s involvement leading to the IPS officer’s arrest in June 2000.
After the court pronounced its judgment, Jain taken into custody.
While talking to media after the judgement Kokil said that he was thankful to the judicial system and also thanked the officers from the department who supported him against Jain. Â Â Â
