IPL gets started in style

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee watched attentively as  Bolywood biggies Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif set the stage on fire. One knows now what Shah Rukh meant when he said he had not done ‘enough’ for the City of Joy yet. Flying drummers, Chinese percussionists, dazzling fireworks and the presence of Bengal’s very own music legends Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri set the tone for an inaugural that the people of this city won’t forget in a  hurry. On Wednesday, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) KKR will host the IPL opener against Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens. The venue will also witness the summit clash on 26 May.

The evening started with the CM lighting the ceremonial lamp in the presence of a host of dignitaries, including BCCI president N Srinivasan, vice-president Arun Jaitley, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya and the cricketers. Shah Rukh, who is also the brand ambassador of the state, thanked Banerjee for her support and said, ‘I’ve always said our performances are in the periphery before the real show (cricket) begins.’

It was a flying female performer’s acrobatic descend on the dais with the trophy that stunned everybody. The performer handed the trophy to KKR captain Gautam Gambhir amindst huge cheers. All the captains beginning with Mahender Singh Dhoni, skipper of the most successful franchise Chennai Super Kings, signed on the ICC Fair Play pledge.
