Inebriated youth run over by truck

Tension ran high at Kasyabpur area under Uluberia police station in Howrah late Saturday night as a mob ransacked a bar following the death of a youth.

The victim was boozing in the bar along with some of his friends till late Saturday night.

When the boozing was over, the victim was trying to cross the road in an inebriated state when he was hit by a speeding truck on National Highway 6.

The situation turned violent as the local people put a road block immediately after the accident. They also damaged a portion of the bar.

After being informed, a huge contingent of police reached the spot but they failed to convince the agitating people. RAF was deployed to control the situation. They resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

According to the police, the road block continued for nearly 45 minutes as a result of which huge traffic jam was created on the National Highway. Vehicles remained stranded for an hour.

Police said that the victim Sudan Pramanik (21), a resident of Kashyabpur area could not see the
truck coming.

As the truck was being driven at a very high speed, the driver could not control the vehicle.

The local people have said that they protested against the running of a bar in the locality on the National Highway which is why many anti-social elements have been operating in the area.

Police are conducting a raid to nab the driver.
