Inebriated youth kill ex-army man for protesting against drinking

A day after a 70-year-old was killed after some miscreants had mowed him down with a vehicle for protesting against the consumption of liquor and creating nuisance in the locality, a retired army jawan was stabbed to death when he protested against the consumption of liquor in the open.

Police said that the victim Seikh Nazir Ali had protested against some of the local youth who were consuming liquor at Amriti village under English Bazar in Malda. As the youth were using abusive languages, Ali asked them to leave the place. But the youth, who were in inebriated states engaged in a verbal duel with the victim.

Some heated exchanges took place between them. But the situation turned ugly when the accused took out a knife and stabbed him. The miscreants open fired while fleeing the spot to terrorise the local people.

The local people found that the victim was lying in a pool of blood.  They rescued him and took him to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Local villagers have alleged that the miscreants were boozing at Natun Tola area of Amriti village for last few weeks.

Despite their repeated pleas, the accused did not listen to them. On Saturday night Ali was returning home through that area. He stopped his cycle and asked them to stop the consumption of liquor in the village.

The miscreants then started a quarrel and beat him up. They also stabbed him in his abdomen.
After hearing the screams of the victim the local people rushed to the spot and found that he was writhing in pain.

The local people demanded adequate security arrangement in the area and also urged the police to take action to crack down the illegal liquor shops in the area.

On the basis of the complaint, the police have started an investigation. They are conducting raids to nab the culprits. Villagers have alleged that accused were backed by local Congress leaders which is why the locals could not dare to protest against them.

The district Congress leaders have, however, denied the allegation and said they had no connection with
the accused.

On Friday a 70-year-old man from Hogolberia area in Nadia was crushed under the wheels of speeding vehicle.

Some local miscreants were involved in the crime as the victim had protested against them for consuming liquor in the open at the locality.

He was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities. The victim also raised his voice against goons who used to pass abusive languages at his grand-daughter.
