Inebriated youth gets run over while evading cops on EM Bypass

Tension broke out on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Beliaghata after a 19-year-old youth was killed after being hit by a truck when he attempted to flee after being chased by the police as he was taking alcohol openly by the side of the road late Friday night.

The victim Joydeb Mondal is a local resident. Two policemen patrolling the area noticed him when he was taking alcohol with some of his friends. Panicking after noticing the police approaching them, all of them started running.

Mondal, however, tried to go across EM Bypass. He was in an inebriated state. He couldn’t control his balance when a speeding truck approached and fell on the road. The truck ran over him and he died on the spot.

The police caught the truck after chasing it for around 1 km as the driver had attempted to flee with the vehicle. Some more policemen reached the spot and took Mondal to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The mob got infuriated when the news of Mondal’s death spread in the area. Hundreds of people came out on EM Bypass and put up a road block causing massive traffic congestion. They started pelting stones at the police when a large contingent of policemen was pressed to disperse the mob.

Finally RAF was deployed. They chased the agitators by raising their lathis and dispersed the mob.
Senior police officers also went to the spot and took prompt steps to clear the congestion on the EM Bypass. Police pickets were posted in the area to avoid further deterioration of law and order situation.
