Inebriated man rams car into pavement in Salt Lake

An intoxicated driver rammed his car into a pavement after losing control of the steering wheel at Salt Lake’s EC Block. Police learnt that the drunk driver was son of an industrialist who resides in Salt Lake. He took the car from FD Park to the EC Block; hit the pavement in front of a Kali temple. 

The youth was injured there and taken to a private hospital. Police initiated a case. “The youth was drinking openly in the car. Some shopkeepers saw him drinking inside the car and driving the vehicle there. He suddenly lost control and rammed into the pavement,” said a police officer.

A motorbike rider crashed with a light post on Monday night at Kestopur’s Hanapara. The bike rider and the person who was riding pillion, died on the spot. Police said the bike was going in high speed when it hit the light post. The rider received injuries in his head and face. His friend fell on the ground and received head injuries as well. The local residents tried to take them to the hospital, but they had succumbed to their injuries by then.

A woman with her two children was crossing Rashbehari Avenue, when they fell in front of an approaching tram towards Gariahat. The mother received heavy injuries while trying to rescue her children. However, the driver of the tram was able to stop his vehicle at the right time. The mother and her children were taken to a hospital.

A head-on collision between two private cars caused injuries to five persons including two drivers. The injured were taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. “A speeding car came down from Maa flyover and collided with another car. Both the car drivers were drunk, as the officer suspected,” said a police officer.

In another incident, a college student died in a road accident at North 24 Parganas Barrackpore. Police said, Surajit Sapui, a 22-year-old youth was going to his college riding a motor bike. A speeding bus hit him from behind and killed him on the spot.

“The boy was riding the motor bike without helmet. She fell on the road and came under the wheels of the bus. She died on the spot,” said a police officer.

The boy was a student of Bengali honours. “His body was sent to post-mortem. His parents lodged complaint against the owner of the bus,” said the officer.
