India name 18-man squad for CT hockey

Striker Gurwinder Singh Chandi failed to make the cut as Hockey India announced a 18-member squad, led by Sadar Singh, for the eight-nation men’s Champions Trophy to be held in Bhubaneswar from December 6-14.

Lalit Upadhyay, who has been capped nine times earlier, has been drafted in place of Gurwinder Chandi in the squad named by Hockey India selectors after trials were conducted at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here on November 18. Sardar Singh, who has played for the country in as many as 200 international matches, has been retained the captain.

Squad Goalkeepers: PR Sreejesh (vice-captain); Harjot Singh. Defenders: Rupinder Pal Singh, V R Raghunath, Birendra Lakra, Kothajit Singh, Gurbaj Singh, Gurjinder Singh. Midfielders: Manpreet Singh, Sardar Singh, Dharamvir Singh, Danish Mujtaba, S K Uthappa. Forwards: Ramandeep Singh, S V Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Nikkin Thimmaiah, Lalit Upadhyay.
