Incensed factory workers run amok over alleged rumour

More than a thousand agitated workers from two export-oriented private companies in Gurgaon’s Udyog Vihar area, allegedly vandalised several factories and offices of the companies located in close proximity, damaging around 60 vehicles parked outside them on Thursday afternoon.

The violence started around 2 pm from two factories of sister concerns – Gaurav International and Richa Global; one located in phase 1 (plot 236) and the other in phase 4 (plot 231). Soon it spread through several plots, including plot number 208, 198, 232, 411, 294 and 293 of phase 1. The agitated workers pelted stones, smashing all the glass windows, computers and factory machines. They even set more than a dozen two-wheelers afire.

The violence was triggered by a rumour that a factory worker in Gaurav International, identified as one Shammi Chand (32), who was allegedly beaten up by a security guard around two days ago for reporting in late, had succumbed to his injuries, said a senior police official. He further said that it was a rumour and we suspect that a few miscreants had shaped up the entire episode.
