Improve facilities at night shelters: Govt

As the national capital reels under biting cold, the city government on Tuesday asked the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to ensure that the homeless poor get sufficient blankets and mattresses at night shelters.

Delhi Chief Secretary D M Spolia, after his surprise inspection of night shelters last night along with DUSIB CEO Amarnath, also asked the authorities to increase the number of night shelters at ISBT and Yamuna Bank, officials said.

He also found that there was shortage of drinking water and mobile toilets at these facilities. Spolia also instructed the Board to take necessary steps in this regard. The Chief Secretary also asked the Board to provide woollen durries and jute mats to the inmates at night shelters and ensure that medical vans visit them more regularly.

Spolia also instructed Amarnath to make arrangements for the allocation of Aadhar numbers to the people staying there.

A night shelter for the children was functioning well, officials said.
