Imposter posing as cop, lawyer to extort man arrested

A daring case of blackmailing and cheating came to light in Delhi where a class VIII dropout posed himself as a Delhi Police SI and lawyer to blackmail and threaten the ex-Dean of All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Though the accused Shahid (27) a residenmt of North Vinod Nagar, was a school dropout but had the confidence to pose as a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector and a lawyer to dupe people in prominent positions. Even the designation of an officer like an ex-Dean of AIIMS failed to deter Shahid to try him as a possible target.

The ex-Dean of AIIMS was receiving calls from allegedly a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Dharampal Singh who threatened him that a non bailable warrant was pending against him and directed him to talk to a lawyer of Patiala House Court who informed the complainant that an RBI case was pending against him and an amount of Rs 72,116 was to be paid by the complainant. The ex-Dean was also given an account number to deposit a huge amount if he wished to evade arrest.

However, the ex-Dean sensed something fishy and informed the police. The Crime Branch investigated the case and found that the caller was an imposter who was trying to cheat the victim. Teams were formed to nab the accused and soon it was discovered that the same person switched roles of a Sub-Inspector and lawyer to blackmail and cheat the ex-Dean.

“While working in a call centre, Shahid came in contact with one Sandip. The accused tried to follow the footsteps of Sandip and implemented the plan to extort money from prospective victims, whose details were obtained

randomly from internet by searching. We have arrested the accused and investigation is on,” said Joint CP Crime Ravinder Yadav.
