IIT results out, Faridabad boy tops

The results of the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), which was held on 8 April, was declared on Friday.

Faridabad resident Arpit Aggarwal from Modern Vidya School, Sector 17 has topped the prestigious IIT-JEE. While Bijoy Singh Kochar from Chandigarh stood second, and Nishant Kaushik from Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh bagged the third place in the highly competitive exam.

Attributing the success to his family and teachers, Aggarwal said 'The guidance of my parents and our educational institution paved the way for my success and I thank them.'

When contacted, Aggarwal told

that he started his preparations right after board exams. The rigorous training meant cutting out on social outings, but apparently, he still Facebooked.

'One very important factor for achieving success is focus. Maximum time and effort went into preparing for my IIT-JEE. Now, I think I would specialise in computer science,' said Aggarwal.

'He brilliantly managed his time and brought happiness in our life,' said Aggarwal's sister Rashi Aggarwal, a Class XI student who wants to get into medical science.

According to Archana Aggarwal and their mother, Aggarwal slept only three to four hours a day during his preparation.

His father, O P Aggarwal, said, 'My son joined coaching two years ago. It has been a great push for him though Arpit has been an intelligent student and possessed tremendous understanding.'

This year more than 5.6 lakh students had appeared for IIT-JEE, which were held at 1,067 centres across the country for admission to 9,647 undergraduate seats in the 17 IITs in the country.

According to sources, 'Of the total candidates, 24,112 have secured ranks in various categories and 19,426 have been shortlisted for counselling for admission to 9,647 seats in the IITs and other institutes.'

This year, of the total 1,50,431 girls who appeared for IIT-JEE, 2,886 have secured ranks and the first 1,908 have been shortlisted for counselling.

These students would be eligible for admission in IITs at Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Mandi, Patna, Rajasthan, Ropar, ISM Dhanbad and IT-BHU.

Admission would be granted based on all-India rank, category rank, and the choices submitted by candidates at the time of counselling.

In all, 4,79,651 candidates appeared in the examination held in 8 April.

'Of the total candidates, 24,112 have secured ranks in various categories and 19,426 have been shortlisted for counseling for admission to 9,647 seats in the IITs and other institutes,' JEE Chairman G D Reddy said.

He said the counseling website will be open to the shortlisted candidates from Friday and all of them are expected to fill up their choice of courses up to 5 pm till 10 June. For the first time this year, the scanned images of the answer script were shown to the candidates between 8 - 10 May to help them submit online revision requests.

All 10 IGL-SPONSORED STUDENYS GET THROUGH


All 10 students belonging to economically weaker sections, who were sponsored by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) under its corporate social responsibility programme, cleared the IIT–JEE examination.

These students were provided free coaching for 10 months, along with food, shelter, textbooks and other basic needs at Abhayanand Delhi Super-30 Centre, being run by Centre for Social Responsibility and Leadership (CSRL) in Indirapuram, under the mentorship of Abhayanand, co-founder Super-30 Patna.

Congratulating the students, M Ravindran, Managing Director, IGL, said, 'I would like to wish a promising future to all students who have made it in IIT-JEE examination this year with their hard work despite all odds.' He added, 'We at IGL have been making efforts to engage with the community and will continue to do so in the future as well.'

Sandeep Agarwal, who got 1563th rank, is the son of a small-time shopkeeper, while father of Rohit Gupta, who got 1824th rank, supplies dairy products to outlets. Father of Ankit Rathore, who got 3024th rank, works in a flower shop in Chandni Chowk. The only girl of these 10 successful students, Poonam Gupta, is the daughter of an auto driver.

Seven of these students are expected to get admission in IITs while the rest are expected to get admission in other reputed institutions that accept IIT-JEE score. IGL had sponsored seven students last year as well, and all of them had cleared the examination.
