IGNOU to offer women and gender studies

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched a post-graduate diploma programme in women and gender studies on Thursday, a university statement said.

The one-year programme will begin in July 2012. It is being offered by IGNOU's School of Gender and Development Studies (SOGDS).

This is the first time women and gender studies will be offered through distance education in the country. The course, being inter-disciplinary, will focus on developing analytical and critical perspectives by examining given knowledge discourses across disciplines from a gender perspective.

Students from any discipline can opt this course after graduation. The course will help to examine women's and gender issues from an academic perspective.

Vice-Chancellor M Aslam was unavailable for comment.
