IGNOU teachers to hold protest

In light of the move of MHRD to shift the Distance Education Council [DEC] to University Grants Commission [UGC], Indira Gandhi National Open University Teachers’ Association [IGNOUTA] is holding a day-long pen-down strike on 3 October.

IGNOUTA has decided to assemble in front of the Convention Centre on IGNOU campus, Maidan Garhi at 11.30 am to stage the protest.

According to IGNOUTA, legally no body other than the Parliament of India can change the status of DEC.

The association spokesperson said, ‘At a time when the existence of UGC itself is uncertain, pending the passage of NCHER Bill, the move by MHRD to place DEC with UGC raises many questions. The interference of MHRD representative in 46th meeting of DEC council, and in the 114th and the 115th meetings of the Board of Management, IGNOU reflect not only MHRD’s highhandedness but are also violative of university’s autonomy and powers of the Parliament. In the 114th meeting of the Board of Management meeting of IGNOU, of the six members who had voting rights, four had opposed the proposal of shifting DEC to UGC and gave their dissent but in vain.’

The IGNOUTA strongly opposed this act of MHRD and staged dharna on 19 September, objecting to the BOM decision to transfer DEC to UGC. The association has requested the Vice Chancellor of IGNOU not to succumb to the pressure exerted by the MHRD on such a crucial issue as this has far reaching implications for the growth and development of distance learning in the country.
