If CBI is corrupt, why the agency probe sought in sensitive case: Sen

Former Joint Director of CBI Shantonu Sen, who handled some of the most sensational cases including “Hawala” in nineties, stressed that the middle class should stand up against corruption but expressed concern that a section of them bows to the pressure of the demand of bribe hence difficult to curb the corruption.

The book was released by AAP leader Prashant Bhushan and former police commissioner Neeraj Kumar at India International Centre on Thursday. While taking a dig at AAP during his book launch event under the banner of “CBI Insider Speaks, Birlas to Sheila Dikshit”, Sen said, “AAP also needs of late a bit of corruption to survive.” On the context of political interference in important cases, he said, “I joined CBI in 1963 and even in those days, interference was there. People like to find out what is happening in the investigation. CBI officers are protected under the law and as long he acts within the law, he can seize himself from any such interference.”

While defending CBI’s efficiency in dealing with cases, he said, “Some call it Corrupt Bureau of Investigation, some named it Congress Bureau of Investigation and Supreme Court termed it as a caged parrot. But still there is a chorus for CBI probe whenever there is a sensitive case. If it is a corrupt organisation then why there is a demand for a CBI probe.”  Sen, first resident of Greater Noida city, has about 45 years experience in public administration and governance especially policing and security. He has retired as Joint Director and Special IG in CBI. He has worked as an adviser to LG Delhi for about  seven years, after his retirement. Citing political and government interference in the functioning of CBI, Bhushan said greater transparency, an overseeing authority will ensure its independence.
