ICFRE DG chairs meet on forestry in Rome

V K Bahuguna, director general, ICFRE, Dehradun, chaired a session on Strengthening Forestry in Land Use Decisions at the COFO 2012 Meet at Food & Agricultural Organisation, Rome on 25 September.

Eminent foresters such as Ricardo Calderon, head of the Forest Management Bureau in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Phillipines, Rosario Arces, general director of the Directorate of Forests and Forest Wildlife [Dirección Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre], Peru,  Youssef Saadani, director of socio-economic development, General Directorate of Forests, Tunisia, Thomas Fameso, deputy director of forestry, Forestry Department, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria were the other members of the panel. August Temu, the deputy director general, Partnerships and Impact of the World Agro forestry Centre in Nairobi, Kenya made an introductory presentation and the panellists debated various issues related to their countries.  V K Bahuguna, DG, ICFRE said ‘Forests play a very important role in ensuring food and water security, providing fuel, fodder and fibre and non-timber forest products, and in mitigating climatic change in large parts of the world’. He asked various panellists to share their experiences in influencing land use decisions to meet these objectives. He further asked the countries to share their experiences about the key strategies adopted by them for strengthening forestry in overall land use decisions in their countries, and also to share the most important steps to be taken to ensure the strengthening of the forestry sectors in their countries in the future.

The audience, from all over the world, interacted with panellists and keynote speakers. The session was concluded by V K Bahuguna, DG ICFRE emphasising the importance of forestry in overall land-use decisions throughout the world. The ICFRE was represented by V K Bahuguna, DG, ICFRE, Saibal Dasgupta, DDG[Ext.]ICFRE and Pankaj Agrawal, ADG[EM]ICFRE.
