‘I take pride in being able to hone people’

In an interview with Millennium Post Shankar Mahadevan, he talks about the talent show Big Golden Voice, his upcoming projects and what he expects since the winner will get a chance to  perform with the music maestro in his next Bollywood film! Read on...

How did you get involved with the Big Golden Voice? What do you find different in the two platforms of television and radio when it comes to singing competitions like this?
When I first heard about the Big Golden Voice, I found the concept really interesting. I instantly wanted to be a part of it. I’ve been a part of various singing and music competitions and talent hunts but this one is one of its kind. You usually get to hear retro music on the radio but this concept is bringing something different from the usual to the arena. One very positive point is that the radio  has wider reach than that of any other electronic mediums and involves a lot of people. The talent this show has found is incredible and it’s wonderful being part of such a concept.

How do you feel about mentoring people now that your son has also stepped in the Bollywood music arena?
(Laughs). My son is very young and he has just entered the industry. He still has a very long way ahead of him. As far as the mentoring is concerned, there is a lot of joy in hearing and training new people, to see that there is such amazing raw talent out there is inspiring. I take pride in being able to hone their skills and cultivate them.

How are you planning to train the contestants?
Oh, I will look into all the aspects of their singing skill and musical ability. My academy will be throughly involved in the training and I will also supervise their growth and try to better their talents through different ways.

Since the winner will get a chance to perform with you, what special attributes are you looking for in the winner?
I am basically looking for a person who reflects an individuality, who has something different of his own. I would prefer an original voice which has certain musicality in it. The person should know all about the aesthetics of music and should bring a freshness to the whole musical scenario here.

Can you tell us something about your upcoming projects?

There are a lot of things going on. I am working on the songs of Kill Dil and Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do. I am also working on certain projects with Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra’s upcoming film. Apart from all that, I am basically involved in working with my own academy.
