'I have dedicated my life for West Bengal'

The venue is where the famous Kolkata Book fair is hosted every year. But Saturday saw West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurating a week-long fair on the Milan Mela ground - the fair has been christened Pragati Utsav - to celebrate her government's first year in power and talk about its achievements. The governor of West Bengal M K Narayanan was in attendance.

Banerjee greeted the huge crowd and said, 'I express my gratitude and simultaneously congratulate you all on this occasion. I want you to judge the past year and tell me if you felt 'poriborton'. Bengal will again look up and I promise you that I will continue to work towards it. I have dedicated my life for Bengal, every moment is important and we cannot afford to lose time.'

While 50 departments of the state government will showcase their achievements over the last one year, a book is being published showcasing the strides taken by the Trinamool government.

Meanwhile, large hoardings with pictures of Banerjee have appeared in the city and the districts, thanking 'Ma, Mati, Manush' for their support.

Ahead of the inauguration, senior bureaucrats, including departmental secretaries, and even ministers reportedly visited the venue to ensure the theme and presentations were eye-catching. Some departments have come up with 3D models on the work done in the past one year, while the fire services department has hit upon the idea of audio-visual and interactive kiosks, apart from displaying some recently-acquired special vehicles with patient-care units.

It was also known the CPI(M) top brass criticised Banerjee for spending lavishly on publicity.

On Sunday, Banerjee will announce recipients of two awards instituted by her government last year, Banga Bibhusan and Banga Bhusan.
