I bathe in half-a-bucket water: Dikshit

With the monsoon all set to be unleased soon, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has urged the citizens, RWAs, head of institutions and custodians of parks and gardens to do their best for water harvesting in the city.

Speaking at a workshop on rain water harvesting, organised jointly by Delhi Jal Board [DJB] and Department of Environment, the chief minister stressed on simplifying the procedures of providing policy support, financial assistance and technical guidance to the citizens and RWAs to ensure that rain water harvesting becomes a major initiative to improve the ground water status in Delhi.

‘The ground water levels in Delhi were so high 40 years ago that the water had to be pumped out to prevent seepage in buildings in various places in Delhi. Today, the ground water level is alarmingly low,’ said Dikshit.

Emphasising on water conservation, she said, ‘I use half a bucket of water for bathing during the summer and ask other family members to follow the same.’

Delhi receives an annual rainfall of 611.8 mm in 27 rainy days during the year, which can be easily stored by way of rain water harvesting mechanisms for subsequent use, both for irrigation as well as recharging of aquifers.

As per the notification of the Delhi government, if the plot size of a building is more than 200 sqm, the permission to draw ground water through tube-well or bore-well shall be subject to the condition that the occupier or the owner of the said plot or building shall install rain water harvesting system. Moreover, water harvesting in all new buildings on plots of size 100 sqm and above has been made mandatory.

The recommendations of the workshop ‘Rain Water Harvesting - Sustainable Solutions to Water Problems of NCT of Delhi’ would be send to policy makers. P K Tripathi, Chief Secretary, Debashree Mukherjee, Chief Executive Officer, DJB, representatives from RWAs, NGOs, consumer organisations and professional water organisations attended the workshop. Officers of DJB, Department of Revenue, Forest and Horticulture, Archaeological Survey of India, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Development Authority were also present for the workshop.
