‘I am far ahead of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan’

What is your role in Dee Saturday Night?
I am playing quite a complicated role in the film. Am essaying a role of shooter who is actually a cold blooded killer till he meets this particular woman who he is supposed to kill. But since she turns out to be a nice woman, he eventually falls in love with her and how and what kind of changes he undergoes then is what my character is all about.
How did you bag this role?
The director and the crew were looking for some special person to play this role and I feel am special to do such a role. Following which Jay Prakash (director) was in touch with me and he narrated me the script and I quite liked the fact that Prakash has lot of energy and enthusiasm about him, thus I was convinced.
Your role in Murder 2 was appreciated by a lot of people. But that was in 2011, what took you so long to make a comeback?
Generally as a person I don't like to do work regularly which is projected as am doing a great and lot of work by people. I do a lot of foreign films and lots of other films which actually don't hit the theatres but it gives me a lot of pleasure. I make movies, am a music director and acting is just a small part of my multifarious activities. Since am seen rarely on screen, people tend to think that am not working, but in reality I have got around five to six movies in hand. I am not a person who would keep working shift after shift. I have a rule - 12 hours mine and 12 hours for the producer.
What is that you want to actually do in life, keeping your versatility in mind?
I still have no idea as yet. I ran away from Delhi, came to Mumbai and wanted to become a producer. But I faced a lot of things on my way. Am in no hurry to reach anywhere, so I think I am content being where I am as of now.
What do you feel about the alternate cinema made by Anurag Kashyap and the likes?
Am not too fond of Anurag Kashyap’s cinema, I think he is just an OK director and has a great PR team working for him. And I have not liked any of his movies till now. Though I would accept if he offers me a role provided he makes a better film.
What is the most important criteria for you to choose a film- script, director or the banner?
The script finally. The banner could be anything and I have refused a lot of big banners with lot of trashy films. So I am pretty open about my wants.
Did you ever think of foraying into southern cinema?
Yes, I have done a film in Malyalam called Unnam which was well received with many stars there. Then am doing my second Malyalam film with Manisha Koirala. My Hindi films include Dhishkiyaon releasing on 28 March where I have composed and sung two songs. In May, I have a film coming called Mai Anna Nahi Hu where I am playing an encounter cop.
You are often categorised in the league of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan. How do you feel about it?
I keep laughing at people who keep writing about how incredible and mind blowing are Irrfan and Nawaz. But these people do things which I have already done in school and over with and it's being written about it now. I don't write nor talk to people and is not hungry for fame.
What do you feel about Bollywood and the nepotism being practised in the industry?
When you have the backing of your father or uncle or anybody, you definitely have a cutting edge. But with time and the work they do, their real talent or acting calibre comes out in the open. There are lots of actors roaming around in biggest of cars and swanky places without any work because their fathers gave them the break and then they failed.
Are you ever branded as an arrogant man because of this attitude that you have?
I am all the time and am absolutely fine with it. Why should I change myself for someone else's fancy and whims. Apke bade hone se mai chota to nahi hota na! And I feel I am too cool for Bollywood. And the people who know my work and like it are Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee and Quentin Tarantino and they are the people I would like to work in future.
