Husband of Cong Panchayat pradhan held for distributing counterfeit currency

The husband of a Congress gram panchayat pradhan was arrested from Kaliachak in Malda district on Friday morning, on charges of distributing counterfeit currencies. Police said that the accused, Md Nehul Sheikh is the husband of the pradhan of Kumbhira Gram Panchayat in Kaliachak block III.

A police officer said that on Friday morning, Sheikh was caught red-handed with counterfeit currencies worth Rs 1.25 lakh from Kumbhira area. The Criminal Investigation Department had also been searching him. Police claimed that they had been searching for Sheikh for the past few days.

They finally managed to catch him Friday morning and produced him before the Malda District Court.
His wife, Sahana Bibi claimed that her husband has been framed by the police as she is a Congress leader. The accused told newsmen outside the Malda District Court that the police had asked him to come to Kaliachak police station as they need to talk to him for certain reasons. He went to co-operate with the police, but they gave some money in his hand and booked him against a false complaint for distributing counterfeit currency. He was later sent to Malda police station.

Brushing aside the allegations brought by the Congress leader against the police, a senior police officer of the district said that the police have done its duty.
