Yale University PhD Janet Yellen, described as ‘a small lady with a large IQ’, met husband George A Akerlof in a Fed cafeteria in the 1970s when both were staff economists. Together they forged academic careers at the University of California, Berkeley, as members of the economics counterculture that attacked the theory that markets operate efficiently minus government intervention. Akerlof went on to win the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2001.
