How do you want news served? In Tamil, Marathi or Gujarati?

The News Services Division (NSD) of All India Radio has launched a year-long celebration to mark the 75th year of news transmission in Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati. NSD started news transmission in various languages in the wake of World War- II way back in 1939. 

Since its inception to date, NSD has contributed immensely in taking news to every small corner of the country. From a modest 27 news bulletins in 1939-40, All India Radio today puts out over 650 bulletins daily for a total duration of over 56 hours in about 91 languages/dialects.

NSD has played a pivotal role in creating awareness among the people through the most difficult period of nation building during the post independence era. The language units have contributed immensely in creating awareness by providing correct and objective news. 

Some of the newscasters and newsreaders-cum-translators have over the years become household names for the people of that language. On the occasion 14 veteran news casters in Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Marathi were felicitated in presence of board of members, director general and Prasar Bharti’s chief executive officer.

Marking the completion of 74 years of language units, number of activities have been proposed to celebrate all round the year, panel discussion on the contribution of language units, various workshops for Language Units will take place, Organising various cultural programme for year long platinum jubilee celebrations. 

Also a Souvenir will be printed during the year with articles related to radio broadcasting written by eminent writers, broadcasters and media personnels.
