Housewife stripped, beaten up

In a shocking incident some villagers from Sakoajhora village in Jalpaiguri dragged a housewife from her house, stripped and beat her up after taking her to a nearby area on mere suspicious of having an illicit relationship with a local youth.

The incident evoked criticism from various quarters and demanded strong action against the accused who were involved in such an incident. The victim’s husband has also lodged a complaint at Dhupguri police station on the basis of which the district police have started an investigation.

The victim’s family members alleged that some villagers had conspired to malign the woman to take some revenge on the family.

On Saturday, the accused entered the house of the victim when her husband was away from home and dragged her out of the house. They later took her to a nearby area where she was tied with a tree.

The villagers then stripped the woman and beat her up. The woman went into a mental trauma following the incident. She also received several injuries on her body in this incident.

The accused claimed that the woman had developed an illicit relationship with a youth in the nearby locality and hence they tried to teach her a lesson.

After being informed, the victim’s husband rushed to the spot and rescued the woman who was mentally shattered after being subjected to inhuman torture. The woman is yet to recover from the trauma. She is undergoing treatment.

The accused villagers, however, denied the allegation of stripping and beating the woman. The police have started a probe in this connection.

Some local residents were also interrogated in this connection. Some of the accused were reported absconding since the incident had taken place.

Stern action would be taken against the accused if they were found guilty, a senior police officer in the district said.
