Housewife found hanging at home; husband, in-laws detained

Police recovered the hanging body of a housewife from her residence at Rajarhat’s Sulangari, under the jurisdiction of New Town Police Station on Sunday.

The family of the woman alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws. Police detained the husband of the deceased, along with her father-in-law and brother-in-law.

“20-year-old Misti Bapari’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. Her feet, though, were touching the bed, which grew suspicion in the investigator’s mind. She could have been killed
by her in-laws,” said a police officer. “We are waiting for the autopsy report,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, the investigators learnt that the girl was being physically tortured by her in-laws on Sunday morning, which she tried to protest against.

“The brother of the victim got a call from her on Sunday afternoon and she requested him to take her
away from her in-laws’ house,” the officer added. “We have initiated a case. Her husband was torturing her for cash money. He wanted her to bring the money from her parents,’ said an investigating officer.

The neighbour, who gave important information to the investigators about the case, said the accused husband used to torture his wife. The in-laws were also no exception. Misti used to scream when she was beaten up.

“The man used to beat her, force her for sex without her permission. Misti’s parents often used to come here to settle the matter, but the torture did not end,” the neighbour alleged.

The girl married the accused man a year ago. The man took a cash of Rs 1.05 lakh as dowry along with jewellery worth Rs 50,000. The girl’s father also promised to give away Rs 1 lakh after the marriage.

“The accused tried to take rest of the amount from girl’s father but her father was taking some time to
give the money,” the neighbour added.
