Hospitals woefully ill-equipped to provide succour to patients

“My sister is admitted here after being tested positive for swine flu. Despite that, the medicine (Tamiflu) was given after a delay of 24 hours. Also, the hospital staff is very reckless with the timings of the medicine. The other day, her medicine was scheduled for 6 am but it was administered at around 11 am,” said Raj Kumar, a relative of the victim.

He further said he has been running after nurses and doctors, complaining about the same but no proper measures have been taken yet. As if this careless behaviour wasn’t enough, patients complain that they have to run around to just get recommendations of doctors for the basic screening test.

“I have been having cough, cold, chills and fever along with chest pain. So, I went to NDMC Charak Palika Hospital for the flu test. But they told me that they don’t have facilities nor do they have Tamiflu. I came to Safdarjung but there is no designated doctor for swine flu. I have been waiting for hours to just a get a doctor for recommendation for flu test,” said Suresh Chander, a government employee here.

Another patient, Ramlia Devi, who has come along with her son to get tested for swine flu said: “There is no specific doctor for attending swine flu patients. The doctor who is looking after other patients suffering from various ailments is the same one looking after swine flu. Due to lack of doctors and proper arrangements, we are forced to go to private hospitals.”

According to Pushpa Rani, nodal officer for swine flu, Safdarjung hospital: “There are adequate medicines for swine flu. There are designated doctors also. We have not come across any complaints by patients till yet.”
