Honour killing feared as Hapur couple’s throats slit

A suspected case of honour killing has come to light with a couple being hacked to death in a village in the district here on Sunday, police said. According to police, the couple was killed by the girl’s mother and her brother, both of whom later surrendered.

The couple, who were neighbours belonging to separate communities living in Kuchesar Road Chaupala village, had got married recently at a court in Ghaziabad, police said. However, when their family members learnt of the matter, they objected to the wedlock and approached the local panchayat on Saturday, which said that the girl and boy should stay with their respective families and not as husband and wife.

The killings took place on Sunday in the morning with the girl’s brother first slitting the boy’s throat before murdering his sister. Later the girl’s brother and mother surrendered before police, said SP RN Yadav. Police said that based on a complaint by the boy’s family, a case has been registered against six persons. The bodies of the couple have been sent for post-mortem. Police said that tension prevailed in the area following the killings in view of which adequate number of personnel has been posted there to prevent any untoward incidents.
