Home Ministry to clean up Delhi police

In order to clean up the corruption mess, the Union Home Ministry is scouting for a squeaky clean officer for the next top cop of Delhi.

The current Commissioner of Police, Brijesh Kumar Gupta, who would be retiring on 30 June, would hand over his charge on 3 June, almost 27 days before his scheduled retirement, as per MHA orders.

According to sources from Delhi police, the ministry has sought a list of officers with exceptional track record. Top on the list is 1976-batch IPS officer Neeraj Kumar, sources said.

According to sources, alarmed by the serious allegations of ad hoc transfers and postings of police as well as what is being perceived by the public as police failure to curb crime, especially against women, the Home Ministry wants to make amends this time round.

'Kumar has an excellent track record, but the pressure from politics may influence the appointment,' said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

Gupta, 1975 batch-IPS had took over as the Commisioner of Police, Delhi, on 10 November 2010.

Kumar had earlier refused a similar posting. Kumar is at present the Director General of Prison. Kumar joined the Delhi police as probationer after completing graduation and post graduation from St Stephen's College.

He served as the assistant commissioner of police in 1979 and had a stint in the CBI, where he led the probe into the Mumbai blasts.
