‘HIV-affected children won’t be denied admission’

Directorate of Education of Delhi has directed heads of all government, private, recognised, aided and unaided schools of Delhi that any child affected by HIV should not be denied admission in pre-school/pre-primary, if otherwise eligible for admission.

Amit Singla, Directorate of Education, said, ‘We cannot discriminate the child on his health issues. According to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, it is the right of every child to have free education. Whether government or private, every school must ensure to admit children living with HIV/AIDS.’

He added, ‘The identity of such children should be kept confidential so that he/she is not discriminated in any way. Such a child should be given all the benefits for which he/she eligible as a normal child.’

Singla went on to say, ‘Firm action will be taken if any school is found not adhering to these instructions.’
