HIDCO plans to set up habitat building for senior citizens in New Town

At a time when parental neglect by children has taken an alarming turn with the news of torture inflicted on them appearing on media almost daily, West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) has planned to set up a habitat for senior citizens in New Town.

This is for the first time when such a step has been taken by a state government agency.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has named the project as Snehadiya.

The foundation stone would be laid next week. Mackintosh Burn has been entrusted to construct the building which will come up on 1 acre of land situated opposite Swapno Bhor senior citizen’s park whose name has also been given by the Chief Minister. Altogether 102 rooms will be constructed along with a guest house comprising six rooms.

The time to complete the project is three years. It has been decided that 75 per cent of the price paid on entry will be refunded to the occupant or the heirs in case of a vacancy.  The cost of food and maintenance will be charged on a monthly basis.

WBHIDCO is working out on the tariff and other financial matters.

This will be for the first time when a hydro therapy unit will be set up for the occupants.

As many elderly people suffer from Arthritis, knee related problems and joint pains, hydro therapy could be of great help as it reduces the pain and helps to regain muscular strength.

It also helps to release stress and generates overall well being. Some good gymnasiums in the city have set up hydro therapy units for the members.

The one in Chetla set up by the state Urban development minister Firhad Hakim has this facility.

The occupants are automatically eligible to be members of Swapno Bhor and use its library, games as well as take part in cultural activities.

It may be mentioned that Swapno Bhor, the senior citizen’s park is the one of its kind in the state. The two storey building houses a library, cafeteria, games room and an auditorium where cultural programmes and discussions of various topics are frequently held. There is a lush green lawn which is a special attraction and is being used by the morning walkers.
